Institution-When association are formed,they evolve certain rules, regulations and laws and also certain ways of behavior, which keep them together. Associations viewed in this way, are called Institution. The term Institution is sometimes used to refer to organisations or associations and sometimes to desinate a normal principle that defines clusters of important behavior, such as marriage or property.

An Institution , however, in not an actual group or association. It is a system of beliefs , norms, values, positions and activities that develop around a societal needs. It is abstract and is used to refer to a fundamental form of social organisation that meets a broad social goals.

W.G.Sumner (Folkways,1906) defined it as:"An Institution consists of a concept (ideas,nation,doctrine and interest) and a structure (a framework or apparatus)". 

According to Horton and Hunt (Sociology,1964),"an Institution is an organised system of social relationships which embodies certain common values and procedures and meets certain basic needs of the society.

Institution as a family-Institution form the foundation of society and supply the basic prerequisites of group life; the reproduction and the socialization of children (family); the affirmation of values and an approach to non-empirical questions (religion) the transmission  of cultural heritage,knowledge, and skills from one generation to the next (education), the production and distribution of goods and services (economy) and social leadership and the protection of individuals from one another and from forces outside the society (politics).

Association-The most characteristic feature of modern complex societies is the associations, which are organised to promote specific interests.It is an organised group of persons pursuing a common purpose through some cooperative action.

Mac Iver and Page ( 1953) stated: "An association is a group organised for the pursuit of an interest or group of interests in common."In reality association are agencies whose major task is to promote awareness and solidarity among members of a collectivity to achieve some goal.

        Difference between Institution and Association
  1. Institution constitute the formalized and regularized procedures.
  2. It is a set of norms and ideas.
  3. Institution are system of norms such as education or religion.
  4. Institution denotes a modes or means of services
  5. Institution are an abstraction.  
1-Association refer to the group the interaction system.
2-It pursue a particular activity or objective.
3-It formed groups such as political parties and trade unions.
4-Association denotes memberships
5-Association have the concrete form in the shape of groups.
